The University of Toronto Rotman Commerce has been teaching commerce since 1901 when the Faculty of Arts began offering a diploma program in Commerce.

In 1909, the University, however, launched a Bachelor of Arts program in Commerce and Finance, which in 1920 became the Bachelor of Commerce.

Despite focusing on commerce, these programs also emphasized the liberal arts, which the program retains today.

The introduction of graduate studies in commerce led to the development of the management school, which officially became a faculty in 1972. 

In 1997, the Faculty became the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, in recognition of its principal benefactor.

Despite the new prominence of management education at U of T, however, the undergraduate commerce program maintained its connection to the Faculty of Arts & Science, which it continues to this day.
